Medical and scientific illustration has to be accurate first. But accuracy alone does not help if people skip past it. We draw health information in a way that feels approachable, so patients and staff actually look, understand and remember.
For Boehringer Ingelheim we illustrated every step of using a Respimat inhaler, turn, open and press, with the device drawn accurately while still sitting naturally in a hand drawn style. For Merck we created a mosquito character and a set of everyday scenes for a dengue fever awareness campaign, and a cast of tooth characters for a staff quiz on dental care, finished in four days.
Illustration also works hand in hand with animation. The Respimat drawings became four instructional films and the Merck mosquito carried an animated awareness film, so one set of artwork can serve print, screen and presentations.
We keep the tone right for the subject. Some health messages need to feel light and friendly, like the Merck tooth characters, while others need to feel calm and reassuring. We agree the tone with you before the first sketch.
Illustration can also reach people that a leaflet full of text does not. A friendly character or a clear step by step drawing works across languages and reading levels, which matters when the audience is spread across many countries, as Merck staff are.
