How to Use Your Respimat Inhaler Every Day, one of four instructional films for patients. From Respimat Inhaler Instructional Films

Clear, accurate and easy to watch

Healthcare films carry a responsibility. The information has to be right, the steps have to be easy to follow and the tone has to reassure rather than alarm. Animation helps because it can show exactly what a person needs to see, from the parts of an inhaler to the moment a mosquito bites, without the distractions of live footage.

For Boehringer Ingelheim we hand animated four Respimat films that walk patients through daily use, first time preparation, replacing a cartridge and knowing when the device needs replacing. The drawing of the inhaler had to be completely accurate while still sitting naturally in a friendly, hand drawn style. For Merck we co created a dengue fever awareness film for staff, and for Novartis we animated a film for the Power of One malaria campaign with Malaria No More.

We also make the films that pharmaceutical teams use internally and in training, from GSK's reusable vaccines news package to two films for Pradaxa in two different styles, one flat 2D and one hand drawn whiteboard.

What you get

Every healthcare film is shaped around its audience and its approval process. These are the things most of our medical projects include.

  • Accuracy you can sign off

Devices, products and processes drawn from your own references, with review points for your medical and compliance teams before anything is animated.

  • Patient friendly storytelling

Characters and scenes that make instructions feel approachable, so people follow them and remember them.

  • Films for every audience

Patient education, staff training, awareness campaigns and internal communications.

  • The right technique

Hand drawn, flat 2D, whiteboard or 3D, chosen for the audience and the subject.

  • A series when needed

One topic per film, as with the four Respimat films, so each step stays simple.

  • Versions for every channel

Files for websites, clinics, events and internal platforms, with subtitles and language versions when you need them.

How it works

  1. Brief.

We learn who the film is for, what they need to understand and where they will watch it.

  2. Script and review.

We write a short script from your material, and your medical team checks every statement.

  3. Storyboard and design.

Every shot is drawn out, including accurate drawings of any device or product.

  4. Animate and review.

We animate the film and share it at key stages, with review rounds for your team and any compliance sign off.

  5. Deliver.

Final files for every channel, with subtitles or language versions if needed.

Questions healthcare teams ask

Can you work within medical and compliance review?

Yes. We build review points into the script, storyboard and animation stages, so your medical, legal and compliance teams can check every detail before the film is finished.

Can you show exactly how a device is used?

Yes. Our Respimat films show every stage of using an inhaler, with the device drawn accurately in each shot while keeping a friendly, hand drawn style.

Do you make 3D medical animation?

Most of our healthcare films are 2D, which suits patient instructions and awareness campaigns. We also use 3D where it helps, as in our Oral-B film that takes the camera down to tooth level.

How long should a medical animation be?

Short enough to hold attention, usually one to three minutes per topic. Our daily use Respimat film runs for 1 minute 44 seconds, and a longer subject can be split into a series.

How many rounds of changes are included?

Review rounds are agreed at the start and built into the script, storyboard and animation stages. The exact number is set out in the quote, so there are no surprises.

Who owns the finished film?

Usage rights are agreed in writing before work begins, so you know exactly where and for how long the film can be used.
