Every board paired a finished illustration with the real ingredient and contestant photography from the episode.

The Brief

Crime Scene Kitchen is a reality baking competition hosted by Joel McHale, with Yolanda Gampp and Curtis Stone judging. In each episode, teams of bakers examine the clues left behind in a mystery kitchen (tools, food remnants, written notes) to deduce what dessert was made there, then recreate it from scratch. Cumi was invited in during the edit of season 2 to redesign the show's evidence board graphics and illustrate every dessert the teams could be asked to identify.

What Cumi Created

We created around 40 unique dessert illustrations for the season, each one built from 5-7 separate layers so it could be animated on screen, the drawing appearing to sketch and colour itself in as each evidence board was revealed. The result was a set of illustrations that needed to work twice over, convincing enough to read as real forensic evidence, and appetising enough that you'd want to eat them.
